10 JANUARY 2007
TRAILER: Hotel 1935.
(Lady with the Lion Pendant)
A fantastical
tale of two unrequited lovers.
A new take on an old tragedy.
Prelude:
The Colonial Rule of 1935. An isle of naval bastion in South
East Asia.
In times of seemingly peace just before the brink of war, an
umbrella organisation of guerrilla freedom fighters - U52 -,
that spreads throughout South East Asia from the growing triads
of Hong Kong to the dotted archipelagos of the Philippines.
For 5 years, unbeknown to the rulers of the small naval bastion
just north of the Indonesian peninsular, U52 sent two cells
of operatives to infiltrate the local bastion. Their mission:
to cause civil unrest within their colonial masters and rupture
their faith in the locals through acts of overt and covert terrorism.
Scene: Ling. Hostess at The Peacock Hotel; covert operative of
Cell B3.
The essence of classic Asian beauty and the muse of many a British
aristocrat, tonight, Ling sits in the backroom of the hotel.
It's been a quiet evening for the high society hostess as she
sits in one of those elaborate wood carved seats of gold embroidery,
long slim cigarette in hand. Her symbolic pendant of a lion's
head glimmers under the dim light resting on her unpretentious
bosom, concealed to wandering eyes by a cheongsam of silky black
and intricate embroidered gold tread, except to the wealthy
and influential.
"Commissioner Herold didn't come in tonight, Ling."
"I know, Jie", she pauses. "The fool."
"You're his favourite"
Ling flicks opens her golden and black lace fan.
"Not for long…"

Flashback. 9 months prior.
Yun. Leader of the overt underground terrorist cell.
Suave. Sharp. Relentless.
He steps out of his vintage Mercedes in an impeccable white
double breasted suit complete with a fedora on his well groomed
crop. A ruby and pearl encrusted ring of a tiger adorned on
his finger shines from the rays of sunlight.
"Brother Yun, U52 has cut their funding to us."
"I knew they would forget about us eventually"
"Worse. We're being tailed."
"B3?"
"Yes"
"Those whores."
***
7 months prior.
Ling and Yun face off in a drug deal conspiracy bust gone wrong
with the British officials. Women in black. Men in white. Pistols
fire. Cement chips off the pillars of the old shophouse. Dust
clouds. Ling slithers away silent as a lynx.
***
5 months prior.
In the luxurious mansion of a British High Commissioner,
the bedroom is lush, and dimly lit. Expensive paintings line
the wall, and detailed cornices and elaborate candelabras dot
the walls. The furniture is antique. The smell of oak and cigarettes
linger in the room.
"You!" he exclaims in a tone lower than a rustle of leaves.
"What are you doing here," she whispers with a voice so straight,
miniature dagger to his throat, "Who are you?" she remains modest
through the sheets even in a state of undress.
"U52"
"No. It can't be." She withdraws her weapon."Leave."
He stares through her eye slits.
"Go.""Before Herold returns"
He is disbelieving.
"If he knows you saw me in this state, he'll slaughter you before
I do."
***
3 months prior.
A run down musky bar. A singer croons a tune so danceable.
In a moment so rare their contemporaries cannot know of. A couple
lock in an embrace through a break in the melody.
"Ling… No one will believe our story"
"That's why we must tell it, Yun"
***
2 months prior.
The mansion
of the British official. Another face off. The men in white
clearly have the upper hand this time. The women in black are
brutally massacred. Yun and Ling are locked. In a completely
different way. Yun looks back. Checks the coast is clear and
lowers his gun from her temple.
"Leave"
***
1 months prior.
Yun rides off from the aristocrat mansion's stables in the official's
prized race horse. His posse of men in their convoy of vintage
Mercedes' blaze behind

Ling. Still in her wood carved chair of gold embroidery, finishes
her cigarette, and relaxes her lace gloved hand as she finishes
her recollections. A contemporary enters the backroom, taps
her on her svelte frame, whispering:
"It's time"
Ling rises from her seat while her confidante watches; her lion
pendant still glimmering in the dim light. She cocks her gold
and porcelain encrusted single bullet handbag pistol.

Our
Annual Fashion Fiesta was a huge success.
A sort of homecoming five years since we started,
personally this has been I think my favourite year.
(maybe
even better than FFO3 @ CHIJMES in 2003)
6 Designers.
30 models.
And a whole load of hell getting the show going.
But it was worth it.
Official
photos and video of the event will be coming soon.

DING-A-LING, IT'S CHRISTMAS IN AUTUMN
Did
you hug someone today?
Did you hold somebody's hand?
Did you dance, sing, love?
Did you?
You
know that Oldie "Love Changes (Everything)"
by Climie Fisher? It goes something like,
"I
was only seventeen
When she looked at me that way
Seems like yesterday"
Yeah,
I was just thinking to myself.
When will we... all of us... I... get out of this rut.
What ever happened to the light, breezy lilt in my... our... steps?
The lightness of being. The incredible feeling of being just alive.
Through
the entire Lindy weekend that just passed, from Fling on Thursday,
to Swinging at the Esplanade on Friday night, to dancing our hearts
away
at Harry's on Saturday, there was this strange sense of emancipation
from
the daily grind.
I
saw Jenie laugh and smile as she got twirled silly that night.
I saw Zhou have a blast trying to keep his steps in count.
We all had fun.
Yes
we suffered blisters, and sweated through our clothes,
but everyone who came, threw their daily worries away for the
evening,
and just... danced.
Ephiphany
struck.
I...
we... are happier when there's a momentum going.
Having a vision ahead. Two is always better.
Then
I had this vision.
This incredible rush as I was sitting there across
the bar with Kate, Jacq & Elina at Harry's after a very swinging
set.
I
saw myself falling head over heels in love all over again.
I felt the touch of another.
The general euphoria of dizziness in ecstacy.
The flutter in the depths of myself
The missing of a beat in my heart.
That lilt in my step came back.
The smile on my face became a real fixture.
The first kiss with someone new.
The excitement.
The bittersweet conversations.
Flowers.
Holding hands.
Arguments.
Making up.
Making out.
Picnics.
Dancing.
Just sitting there.
Reading books.
Going on an adventure.
And
as I imagined.
The more exciting it became.
The more it became possible and real.
Invisible walls we... I... build just detonated.
Cynics
begone.
Call me an idealist or a dreamer.
Pray, the world needs more...
Climie
says it best...
"I've
seen the way love
Shakes you, makes you, breaks you
It's got a power of it's own
Love
changes, changes everything,
Love makes you fly,
It can break your wings"

DIAMOND DOGS
This
is a truly rare gem of a movie. 'Gigolo Wannabe'.
Don't be fooled by the name, it's good clean family fun. I couldn't even spot a speck of cleavage through
the entire production. ;)
Really,
everyone please watch it if you can. I cried thrice.
It speaks to me in a rather profound simplicity I suppose.
It's
at times rather 'predictable', and somewhat, 'lame'.
But that's the heart of this wonderful film.
Pure honest sense of wonder, hope, trust, friendship, kindness
and love.
Deeply touching & moving about what really matters in life.

Seven
young men who are desperate for quick money arrive at a desolate
seaside bar, called Dog Days, to audition as "hosts". This
is the highly popular occupation of entertaining female patrons
with smooth talk and a soothing smile while offering them drinks
at "host clubs."
Although
their previous jobs varied from street performer to ex-banker,
they are all happy to get this dream job so easily, until they
discover that the 'manager' has run off with their deposits!
Upon
seeing them so discouraged, the sympathetic bar owner offers his
place for them to open up a host club by themselves. With the
help of his granddaughter, Chika (who has a heart disorder), and
despite the combination of their initial confusion, personal problems
and a typhoon that almost blew the place down, they gradually
find the true meaning of friendship, trust and love.

The
dwarves were diamond miners... yet they mined the most
beautiful one from Snow White's heart.
She didn't want to leave this time.
Thank
you for the wonderful summer.

precious gift. Memories.
